The parka, a good coat for weather but, is it really a coat…No it isn’t, it’s a shell, to be worn over a uniform or thick clothing, so not a coat. The word PARKA, is made up of letters p a r k a and the first letter, the ‘P’ stands for Pacific, and that’s where l stop because the meaning was printed out sometime ago but has since then gone astray.
So l can say that there is no such coat as a Parka, the Parka is a fairly modern term for a hooded coat, but the original term was a shell, to cover clothing in harsh to freezing weather as soldiers endured during the Korean war of the 1950’s.
I have always been interested as to the meaning of the letters P.A.R.K.A and way back l looked it up and then l printed it out, why it should go missing at the time l needed it it strange.
But the letters do stand for something and it’s not Parka, the use of the parka coat came much later during the 1960’s onwards…even today you can go to a shop and ask to see a parka.
Oh well, no matter what l say you will say l don’t know what ‘F’ l’m on about but l can tell you that there was no coat called a parka until the 1960’s arrived with the Mods, and the original garment had the letters P.A.R.K.A on the label and that was how the shell got it’s name.
